About your role
The Fairphone Technology and Product department is looking for a Software Delivery Manager responsible for the end-to-end delivery of the Android upgrades and the maintenance releases for our mobile devices (audio devices could also be in the scope of the role). You will join our growing team and actively take part in its development. You will manage and define the scope of the software releases and Android upgrades, including the definition of the release schedules and milestones, the identification of the risks and the coordination with various internal and external stakeholders ensuring that software releases are delivered on time, within budget and are of the highest quality. This role requires a strong blend of technical understanding, communication skills, organizational talent and a passion for our mission. You will report directly to our Head of Product, under our CTO.
Key Responsibilities & Objectives
Key Objectives
  • Define release schedules and milestones, identify risks and escalate issues that occurred during product release cycles.
  • Coordinate the development tasks across our software and hardware engineering teams, product management and quality teams to track software deliverables such as Android releases and Android upgrades.

Your Key Responsibilities
  • Prioritization: Manage the scope of releases in light of priorities and available resources. Weigh competing interests and priorities, including telco operators requirements, partner requirements, product requirements, software fixes and quality assurance requirements. Ensure (external and internal) engineering teams are focused on key deliverables so that ensure project goals are met.
  • Release management: drive the end-to-end planning and execution for all Android OS releases and major software updates throughout the mobile device's entire lifecycle (from launch to end-of-life). This includes securing necessary resources, proactively maintaining risk and decision registers, and coordinating all internal and external dependencies to guarantee smooth and timely release delivery.
  • Cross-functional alignment: act as the primary point of contact for software delivery management, collaborating closely with our internal software engineers, product owners, product managers, quality assurance team, telco technical account managers, and our external software partners.  You will need to manage expectations and negotiate trade-offs between the different stakeholders, also guiding and supporting them to define and pre-prioritize their needs.
  • Process improvement: continuously assess and improve our software development and delivery processes to further increase efficiency and the quality of our products. Establish success metrics for every Android OS release and all major software upgrades.
  • Reporting: Provide regular, proactive updates on release/upgrade status. Communicate decisions and risks to management and key stakeholders.
Your Skills & Experience
  • You have a minimum of 7 years experience as a Software Delivery Manager, Project Manager, or similar role in the smartphone or consumer electronics industry.
  • You have a background and formal training in Computer Science
  • You have a strong understanding of the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) and the Android SDLC (Software Development Lifecycle) and a solid technical background in software engineering, ideally with an understanding of mobile hardware and firmware.
  • You have experience managing complex software projects with multiple internal and external dependencies.
  • You have familiarity with Agile methodologies (Scrum for example)  and software management tools (Jira, Gitlab). Experience with setting up Jira workflows is a plus.
  • You have excellent communication, leadership, and negotiation skills.
  • You have demonstrated abilities to manage multiple projects and competing priorities.
  • You have excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.

Daily Activities
  • Lead the regular meetings with the main stakeholders to get updates on progress, identify blockers, and ensure the internal/external engineering teams are aligned on the day's priority (e.g., bug fixes, AOSP integration, operator testing).
  • Actively clear roadblocks for the teams — this could involve overcoming a technical hurdle with a partner, or getting a rapid decision from a product owner or a technical account manager.
  • Triage inbound requests from internal teams and external partners.
  • Check the status of critical tasks in Jira/GitLab, ensure tickets are correctly prioritized based on the release schedule, and verify the Definition of Done for upcoming builds.
  • Spend time with the main stakeholders to compare new requirements or bug reports against the current release scope and timeline, negotiating and making data-driven trade-off decisions.
  • Check the status of automated builds (CI/CD) or non-automated builds and QA testing cycles for different release tracks (e.g., Alpha, Beta, Production Candidate).
  • Proactively review and update the risk register, focusing on high-impact/high-probability risks (e.g., carrier certification approvals, critical AOSP vulnerability, performance regressions) and planning mitigation steps.
  • Conduct scheduled or ad-hoc calls with key external partners (e.g., software suppliers) to review their delivery milestones and manage dependencies on their side.
  • Prepare or deliver status updates to the Head of Product/CTO and other management team members, providing a clear, honest view of the release health, risks, and necessary escalations.
  • Handle the retrospective, review the efficiency of the latest completed software release, looking for bottlenecks in testing, handovers, or approval processes, and documenting actionable improvements.
  • Ensure release-related documentation (e.g., release notes, feature descriptions, and formal sign-off documents) is accurate and complete for both internal archives and external partners.
