This position will ensure that our suppliers provide accurate and timely information on the product composition, the materials used in our products and sustainability data of our suppliers. You will ensure Fairphone can demonstrate compliance with relevant chemical legislations (ROHS, REACH, etc.). You will further develop Fairphone’s leadership on chemicals management, both for materials in product and process chemicals, in line with industry best practices (or beyond). As our need to collect data from suppliers expands, you will ensure this is managed well, and that the systems and processes to collect the information are as smooth as possible for both Fairphone and our suppliers.

Key Responsibilities & Objectives

  • Lead and further develop chemicals management

Your Key Responsibilities
1. Manage product & supplier data
  • Ensure that our suppliers provide accurate and timely information on the product composition, the materials used in our products, and other relevant information from (sub-)suppliers. Your responsibilities will include:
  • Manage and oversee the execution, update and improvement of the digital “Green Product Management (GPM)” system, used to collect a variety of product, compliance and sustainability data from (sub-)suppliers.  This data includes Full Material Declarations (FMDs), Bill of Materials, chemical usage, mineral due diligence (incl. 3TG, cobalt, mica and battery minerals using CMRT and EMRT), recycled materials and certifications, supplier locations and sustainability due diligence data. This would also include engagement with the GPM system provider.
  • Lead and plan the data collection schedule, ensuring our final assembly (ODM partners) collect (sub-)supplier data through the GPM system. Follow-up with (sub-)suppliers to ensure timely and complete submission of data.
  • Assisting (sub-)suppliers in improving their data input process and accuracy, building their knowledge and capacity for effective and accurate data collection.
  • Verifying the accuracy and completeness of the submitted data (especially for FMDs), following up with suppliers, most of whom are currently based in China, to ensure errors are corrected and gaps are filled. This also involves engaging with Fairphone’s internal teams, requesting (sub-)suppliers to further check and report the product composition (both substance and weight), and conducting additional research to find supporting evidence to corroborate and verify the data provided by the  sub-suppliers  and to correct the data where necessary.
  • Collaborating with internal teams, including the social & environmental due diligence manager, to ensure data consistency and to support the achievement of product compliance and sustainability KPIs.
2. Lead and further develop chemicals management
  • Ensure Fairphone’s products are in line with our Restricted Substances List (RSL) and relevant regulations on chemicals (ROHS, REACH, etc), and advance Fairphone’s leadership on chemicals used in manufacturing and in products. This will include:
  • Monitor and oversee testing for chemicals compliance against REACH, RoHs, and other existing regulations, in collaboration with the Product Certification Manager who ensures contracting of laboratories and compiles documentation.
  • Monitor ongoing compliance to substances restriction legislation, and oversee (pro-active) testing against Fairphone’s Restricted Substances List (RSL), incl. the restrictions that go beyond regulatory compliance
  • Manage chemical due diligence in line with the Responsible Business Alliance’s (RBA) Chemical Due Diligence Leadership Program, identify risks in the supply chain, oversee the collection of data and reporting, and ensure (sub-) supplier readiness for upcoming legislation.
  • Collect and review information on process chemicals (using the PCDC-tool)
  • Participate in relevant industry and multi-stakeholder initiatives (RBA, CEPN) related to chemical management, oversee the collection of data and reporting.
  • Ownership of the Fairphone RSL, reviewing and updating it regularly to incorporate upcoming developments in REACH, ROHS and other relevant chemical legislation, industry best practices and common restriction lists.
  • Support with reporting the data and evidence as required by governmental agencies, customers, investors, consumer facing rankings and ecolabels and other relevant stakeholders with regards to chemical compliance.

  • You have a background in Chemical Engineering or material science.

  • Proven track record in ensuring product compliance with regulatory or company-specific requirements on chemical substances.

  • Experience with electronic product composition and/or experience in electronics supply chains highly desired, including reporting of Full Material Declarations.

  • Experience in engaging directly with (sub-)suppliers to obtain and improve data, and experience managing the collection of proof on material content from suppliers.
