About your role

Fairphone is looking for an Android  Engineer who possesses a passion for advancing sustainable mobile technologies. You will work within our Software Engineering team of talented engineers, developing new customisations on the Fairphone Operating System (OS), crafting seamless, custom components and unique OS-level functionalities that redefine how users interact with the Fairphone devices.

You will report directly to our Staff Software Engineer and Front-end Tech Lead of the Software Components Team, under our Head of Software Engineering.

Key Responsibilities & Objectives

  • Developing and integrating new features and customisations on our Android Operating system,
  • Supporting the integration of AI features within our operating system,
  • Supporting the development of Fairphone-branded apps in our operating system, like Fairphone Moments & MyFairphone App,
  • Ensuring a consistent user experience across various operating systems that are managed on different devices and potentially manufactured by multiple original design manufacturers,
  • Supporting our design team in understanding where improvements should be made to ensure a cohesive experience,
  • Unit and integration testing code for robustness, including edge cases, usability, and general reliability.
  • Bug fixing and improving application performance,
  • Integrating system apps and other apps in our devices’ operating systems,
  • Collaborating with cross-functional teams to define, design, and ship new OS features,
  • Working with data sources and APIs,
  • Building compelling new user experiences within Android apps,
  • Continuously discovering, evaluating, and implementing new technologies to maximize development efficiency.

Your Skills & Experience

  1. Proven software development experience in Android app development,
  2. You are a programmer and are comfortable with Java/Kotlin,
  3. You have experience with Jetpack Compose,
  4. You have deep knowledge of the Android SDK, but also the Android framework/ AOSP,
  5. knowledge of mobile device technologies, including smartphone architectures, camera/video technologies, touch screen displays, and sensors,
  6. You have experience/knowledge with working in an agile environment and with software development tools such as git, Gerrit, Gitlab Jenkins,
  7. You have excellent debugging skills to solve challenging problems,
  8. You have experience working with remote data via REST, JSON and XML,
  9. You have experience with third-party libraries and APIs,
  10. You have a solid understanding of the full mobile development life cycle,
  11. You appreciate Free and Open Source software and want to collaborate with the community,
  12. Experience with working on server-side technologies or on AI & Android are a plus,
  13. You feel a strong and intrinsic connection with Fairphone’s vision, mission and values,
  14. You are hands-on, take initiative and see opportunities where others see issues, and apply them via constructive, creative thinking,
  15. You love technical challenges,
  16. You embrace diversity in thoughts, opinions, levels of seniority and backgrounds and feel good working with many nationalities in a multicultural environment,
  17. You are passionate about improving the quality of our software. A small fix delivered to many people has a big impact,
  18. You (are willing to) live in the Netherlands and have the right to work within the EU.
